SOLO WORK

BACKGROUND

Although I am primarily known as a Singer, Saxophonist and Flautist, my father, a New York City jazz guitarist, taught me guitar at an early age.
Unfortunately, I laid it down for years to concentrate on running my band, The Dave Bass Quartet.
But I picked it back up in 2001, after my father’s death, and began expanded my technique and style.

I love singing with just a guitar; there is something about it that is primal, transparent.
No auto tune, no time manipulation, no effects - just pure music made in real time.
It is refreshing in an age when many musicians use “gimmicks” and “sampling” and call it music.

BUT DON’T GET ME WRONG - My Quartet is still my favorite vehicle for performing!
The versatility with 4 pieces is incredible; I can spin on a dime from Sinatra to Jobim to Steely Dan;
and we have 1,000s of tunes in our repertoire and 1,000s of gigs under our belt in this configuration.
Other size ensembles have their place, too - Trios, Duets and larger ensembles.
But sometimes... just a voice & guitar is just right.

SAMPLES

* NO OVERDUBS * NO PITCH SHIFT * NO TIME SHIFT * NO BULL SHIFT *
: )
First, here is an example of the kind of Vocal Jazz I like to play with my Quartet:
It Could Happen to You (with Dexter Gordon's "Fried Bananas")
Pro Studio Recording
Dave Bass, Voice & Tenor Sax; Dan Baraszu, Guitar; Brian Hall, Bass, Justin Varnes, Drums.
  SOLO GUITAR & VOICE:
Here is an example of Brazilian Bossa Nova with just Guitar & Voice:
Corcovado (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
Recorded on an iphone in my bedroom in early morning voice (lol) - no reverb added.
  Jazz - Guitar & Voice:
Penthouse Serenade (a rather rare "Standard")
Recorded on an iphone in my bedroom in early morning voice.
More Vocal Jazz, a little more up tempo - Guitar, Voice & Sax
I Only Have Eyes for You
A semi-pro recording while I was testing a piece of gear on loan, some years ago.
I did two passes - one on Voice & Guitar and then one on Sax.
Now that I listen back, I wish I'd bought the piece of equipment!
  Classic Pop / R&B - Guitar & Voice:
Black Cow (Steely Dan)
Recorded on an iphone in my bedroom in early morning voice.
(Yes - I realize the lyric is "IN the corner" and not "on." But hey - it was early in da mornin'!)
And here is an example of me on Sax and Flute- over a Background Track:
Isn't She Lovely (Stevie Wonder)
Something uptempo and funky
Recorded in my new studio here in Atlanta
