It Could Happen to You

Dave Bass, Voice & Sax
Dan Baraszu, Guitar
Brian Hall, Bass
Justin Varnes, Drums

Fly Me to the Moon

In Vegas at a famous (and very noisy) bar!

Made for Each Other
by Robert Bass

A beautiful song written by my father
in NYC when he was 16.
I multi-tracked all instruments
in one take each in my studio in LA.

Autumn in New York

Alto Sax
Dave Bass Studios
An example of softer, lyrical jazz;
(I was missing my hometown something awful).

Mack the Knife

Baritone Sax
w/ the Gainsville Big Band
Video by Scott Fugate, 2008

Body and Soul

Tenor Sax
Perhaps my favorite jazz ballad of all time

Thriving on a Riff

Alto Sax
Recorded on a sweltering hot day in LA
(with a saxophone going flat, lol)!
Assistance by Elizabeth, circa 2013

Aw Shucks, Hush your Mouth

w/ Skyler Saufley, Blind Willie's

Oke-She-Moke-She-Pop

w/ Skyler Saufley, Blind Willie's

Trouble

w/ Skyler Saufley, Blind Willie's

Aquele Abraco

Soprano Sax
With Rua 6, a Brazilian band
that was very popular in Atlanta.
Juan Bonini and Andre Rivers perform
with their own groups around town now.
(So glad I got a better soprano since then)!

(Untitled)

Flute w/ effects, percussion
w/ DJ Inaia, a popular Los Angeles / Miami DJ.
Many people think I picked up these flute effects
by listening to Jethro Tull, but it was
actually Roland Kirk who inspired me.

Quiet Nights
Jobim / Lees

Solo Guitar and Voice
I had the great privilege of knowing Gene Lees
and spending time with him in his house in Ojai.
Gene was the editor of Downbeat Magazine
for years, was a wonderful lyricist
("Waltz for Debby" is my fave) and knew
Jobim, Bill Evans, Sarah Vaughan, Oscar Peterson,
Ray Brown and a host of other great musicians very well.

Will it Go Round in Circles?

With the Big Dixie Mafia,
MacCracken's Irish Pub, Marietta

Night in Tunisia

Baritone Sax
Arrangement by Dave Bass, © 1996
My mother was born in Tunis, Tunisia,
where my grandfather was a bandleader.
Maybe that's why I love odd time-signatures so much!

Selam (peace)

w/Wudasse, funky Ethiopian band out of Atlanta
Recorded by Billy Kirk at The 5 Spot, 2006

The Chicken

Chairs in East Point Village
with the house band

Mustang Sally

Hey, I admit it - I love a good party!
As you can see, I have zero reservervations about leading people around in a "train" as well. And why not? With all the misery in the world, it's great to see people being happy!

(There's a funny story about Benny Carter catching John Coltrane 'walking the bar' in a blues club - and Coltrane ducking out of sight so Benny wouldn't see him)!

Fast Blues

w/ The Big Dixie Mafia Band
MacCracken's Irish Pub, Marietta

Next One to Cry
Grant Rosen

David Sanborn-style screamin' Alto
over an original by an LA artist

Sentimental Me
Rusty Johnson

This was only my second time in a recording studio, early 90s.
The singer / composer had just weathered a very difficult time in his life; the mood on this track shows it.
This is the softer side of rock;
a side I like a lot.

Who Can It Be Now?
Men at Work, 1981

When I ran my LA studio,
I was asked to re-create this iconic sax part
so a band could sync it live at their shows.
It was a blast! I was able to match
the same mouthpiece and microphone.
I even used a thin reed and tried to play
slightly flat, ala the orginal.

Original Track:

My copy:

Although most of my performances are with my Quartet,
there is something very satisfying about singing with just a guitar.
I have done this for clubs as well as retirement home and am favored for memory care facilities
because I love to get people singing along with me!

Blue Suede Shoes

In my father's style of R&B guitar

Body and Soul

Tenor Sax
Perhaps my favorite jazz ballad of all time

Just Another Gig
© Dave Bass

The germ of this song came to me
while I was driving home from a less-than-fulfilling gig,
(hence the rather sarcastic title).
However, as songs go, this one wound up
evoking a New Orleans dark alley / cemetary feel.
Which, in either case, was better than the gig I was on!

Dan Baraszu, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Keith Runfolla, drums
Recorded for Tom Carpenter's show on PBS

Delilah's Dream
© Dave Bass

This was the song that got me started
as a composer. I awoke one morning
to a dream in which I was singing this song
to my then girlfriend, circa 1997.
I didn't realize until years later that my memory had
"lifted" part of a Henry Mancini tune for the bridge.
I've got to go back and re-write
this bridge someday!

and sax in my studio in LA, one take each.

The Dave Bass Quartet
Cafe tu tu Tango, Buckhead
From an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"Dave Bass is jazz music's most extraordinary secret. A virtuoso on multiple instruments,
(with particular emphasis on his haunting sax), Dave combines instrumental mastery
with vocal skills that, alone, have driven the careers of many world-renowned performers.
It is only a matter of time before Dave is no longer Atlanta's best-kept secret!”
- Connie Zerden, Vice President & General Manager, Showtime Networks, Inc.

"Dave Bass is a singer inspired by Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles
and a tenor-saxophonist whose tone recalls Dexter Gordon."
- Scott Yanow, jazz historian and author

"Dave is jazz music's most extraordinary secret. A virtuoso on multiple instruments.
His talent is pure and terribly entertaining."
- Michele Rhea Caplinger, Executive Director of the Recording Academy, Atlanta

"Listening to him, I hear an exuberant lover, a wise old pal, a lonely figure on a park bench.
He's a man with Sinatra in his voice and silver in his fingers."
- Todd Leopold, Entertainment Producer - CNN

"The Dave Bass Quartet not only performs a hefty Sinatra repertoire, it also evokes a mélange of musical tastes, including Latin tempos, swinging jazz tunes, R&B riffs and funkified rhythms.
Versatility like this almost guarantees a spotlight."
- Kenneth Rollins, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"I'd like to affirm Dave Bass for his passion and artistic excellence - I am inspired every time I hear him play."
- J. Scott Fugate, the "Jazz Evangelist" and founder of the "Atlanta Jazz Group"
