SELMER SUPER SAX ALTO
"Cigar Cutter"
16,136
1932
Silver plate with a Gold Wash bell & neck
Near Mint Condition

Tested with Brilhart rubber mp, recorded on iPhone

This Selmer is a great example of the 1930's Golden Age of Saxophone making.
The tone is rich and full and with a wide dynamic range (listen to the recording).
It actually has a greater dynamic range than my Mark VI! - (although I am more used to my VI).

The pads are like new and seal from top to bottom with no resistance;
Master repairman Wil Grizzle just checked everything and made fine adjustments.
The pads are the same red color Emilio Lyons uses, although I have not asked Emilio yet if he did this horn.
One thing is for sure; the pads are soft and supple, so this horn was NOT played long after the repadding!

No dings or repairs; the tube is pristine,
although I photographed it outside and it picked up reflections of everything around it.

The plating is uniformly good with the exception of some spots here and there.
I polished the bell using Wenol and a super-soft t-shirt to see how it would come out;
If you disassembled and polished the whole horn it would sparkle.
If can get Wil to do this before shipping, if you like, for a minimal fee.

The Ergonomics are good; I don't even mind the LH pinkie stack.
The pearls have been worn down a little; they are a bit flat but they feel good and there are no metal edges.
The palm keys have two of those risers that look like Oleg's; I did not try to take them off.

THE TONE
Big, beautiful, rich, luscious. Nothing like it today (not even modern Selmers).
It is the POLAR OPPOSITE of a modern Asian horn -
you can give it as much air as you like and it keeps giving you more tone - it never sounds thin.

The case is original and in good condition.
The right latch needs work and the left latch is finniky.
I am throwing in the case cover to protect the case from opening.
If I were you I would refurbish the case, store it and use a modern case.

I would have a tech go over key heights (cork) to fine tune intonation.
T hat's all it really needs, to my mind.

“Hi Dave, just wanted to give you the heads up that I received the clarinet and absolutely love it. Exactly what I was looking for; and it plays very effortlessly! I teach clarinet on the side to saxophone, and this has finally made playing the clarinet fun for me. Thanks so much, it’s really appreciated! Absolutely incredible seller, took the time to take the clarinet to the shop before shipping it to make sure it was in great shape. Instrument was exactly as described if not better, can’t recommend enough!”
Kyle, purchased 1960 Selmer Series 9 Bb Clarinet, 11/21

"I appreciate the level of care for an instrument near a century old and the expert communication. I got it today, tested it out and WOW - it is amazing! This horn has a rich, beautiful tone across ALL registers. I have played on many R13s and this is one of the most resonant clarinets I have ever played on. Amazing condition, especially considering that the clarinet is almost a century old! I was honestly blown away by the quality. 10/10 - I cannot wait to use this horn in my performance, teaching and practice. I am really, so very happy with the horn I bought and I am more than happy to share positive reviews and refer your profiles to my friends,
many of whom are professional musicians. All my best."
Thomas, purchased 1930's Buffet 'A' Clarinet, 5/21

Wil, purchased Gemeinhardt Alto Flute, 1976, Solid Silver Head, Just Serviced, 2/21

"Recently I purchased a great instrument from a seller who also deserves that description and it is a pleasure to recommend him to others who are looking to upgrade their equipment, instrument or to capture all that is possible in recording. Dave is a true professional who has spent his life in music attaining the highest achievement and knowledge technically and in artistry as a performer and is he extremely open and genuinely enthusiastic in sharing ideas. He sent me recordings he had made of my flute before I bought it from him, he made sure it was superbly set up, and we engaged in a number of long, worthwhile conversations before the transaction was finalized.
In these times, it is especially unexpected and valuable to encounter an individual who conducts business on such a high plane of integrity and depth and it is my belief that anyone who contacts him for a product or service that he offers will greatly benefit."

"I'm a working professional in cinema and television, and have been expanding my work into Voice Over and Audio Recording.
Dave has been an incomparable resource in this process. His opinion is informed by experience and he's been able to share that with me in ways that have helped considerably.
His knowledge of microphones, pre amps, compressors, and the entire mic signal chain (and how they interact) is wide and deep.
When I was looking to record a musical ensemble for a new project, the first place I turned was Dave and his fountain of facts.
He speaks with clarity and always has a good anecdote to back up his references.
A consummate professional, a great audio consultant, and an excellent resource."
Stephen Lee Clement, Voice-over Artist, Consulted for him & helped find Gear, 10/19

"Hey, it just arrived and it's in fantastic condition. I just got around to trying it out. It sounds perfect. The noise floor in Figure 8 and Omni are typical of an older mic but the Cardioid is dead quiet. I mean, you could record silence with this thing. I actually just found another one on the internet so I'm working a bunch to save money so I can have a stereo pair of them.
Thanks a bunch for getting it into my hands."

"Hi Dave, The mouthpiece is really as you you said, its just great. The work from Wil Grizzle definitely improved the mouthpiece - you can even see it, the facing is just incredible... These mouthpieces are just so hard to find, and the only reason i have it is because of you. I got exactly what i wanted... you did a really good thing for me, and as sincerely as i can write it...
Thank you very much!"
Nathan from Italy, purchased Vintage Otto Link sax mouthpiece
